What Would van Gogh do?

June 7, 2017

I have been working on a series based upon Vincent van Gogh. I call the  series "What would van Gogh's Do?" I ask myself the question what would his work have looked like if he had worked as a potter living Texas? So far I have created a few ceramic peices and mosaics. I ask the same question replacing the workd potter with "ceramicist" or "mosaicist" where applicable. The photos are some of my work inspired by his "Sunflower" series of paintings. I follow the van Gogh Museum on Facebook and Instagram. I am inspired by the amount of Art he produced in such a short period of time. Folklore tells us he never sold a painting. He was supported financially by his brother Theo who was a gallery owner. It is known van Gogh lived for a while in an asylum. He cut off his ear after being rejected by a female and painted a self-portrait with a bandage on his head. He shared studio space for a while with Paul Gaugin but it is said they fought all the time and that partnership was short lived. It is also thought that he shot himself in the chest and died two days later. Another plausable therory is that someone else may have shot him. If he were trying to kill hiself would he not inflict a mortal wound to stop his mental anguish? Think about it. Would he shoot himself to suffer more? In his lifetime, he painted some of the most recognizable works in art. Everyone knows "Starry Night". Most people can recognize his work from his style which includes heavy brush strokes and vivid colors.  He also painted the same subjects multiple times. Several version of "Sunflowers" exist as does paintings and drawings of his bedroom in the asylum. It is also thought that he shot himself in the chest and died two days later. Another plausable therory is that someone else may have shot him. If he were trying to kill hiself would he not inflict a mortal wound to stop his mental anguish? Think about it. Would he shoot himself to suffer more?
